Kenya’s national cricket team will jet out of the country next Wednesday for South Africa where they will take part in the third edition of Africa T20 Cup, Cricket Kenya has said.

Cricket Kenya general manager Josephat Murithi on Wednesday confirmed the national team will feature in the tournament organised by Cricket South Africa as a curtain-raiser to their 2017-18 domestic season.

The championship involves 13 South African Provisional sides and three invited teams: Kenya, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Kenya is drawn in Pool C along with Free State, Northern Cape and Kwa Zulu Natal. Kenya will play their opening match of the tournament against Free State next Friday and face Northern Cape the following day.

They play their last game of the preliminary rounds against Kwa Zului Natal On Sunday September 10.

Commenting on the tournament, Kenya’s national team coach, Thomas Odoyo, said: “We only managed to win a single game in the previous tournament. We will try to register at least two wins to qualify for the quarter finals.”

“The CK selection sub-committee will name the side, but I do not expect much changes, It will be a squad of 13 players.”

Lately, the performance of the men’s national team has been inconsistent particularly in the ICC World Cricket League Championships where they shared points with Hong Kong and lost to both Nepal and Papua New Guinea.

Kenya’s hope now appears to lie with the current under-19 squad that qualified for next year’s ICC Under-19 World Cup during the qualifying event in Nairobi last month that brought together Ghana, Botswana, Uganda and hosts Kenya.
