Watch snowboarding and freeskiing U.S. Olympic finals at Mammoth Mountain this weekend — for free
Mammoth Mountain ski area will host snowboarding and freeskiing competitions this weekend to determine who will represent the U.S. at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Visitors can see qualifying and final events for free from the main lodge or along the course at the Mammoth Lakes, Calif., resort.
Snow is forecast for Thursday and Friday at the site, which as of Wednesday had a 40-inch base at the main lodge and an 84-inch base at the summit, according to Mammoth Mountain.
Highlights of the U.S. Grand Prix include halfpipe and slopestyle competitions. A free fireworks show with a live DJ on Saturday night will be held at the main lodge for a ceremony announcing U.S. team members.
Also, athletes will be on hand during the weekend for autographs.
The lineup of events includes:
- 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, freeski halfpipe men’s and women’s finals at the Unbound Main Park’s 22-foot pipe
- 6:30-8 p.m. Saturday, snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle finals for men and women
- 8:30-10 p.m. Saturday, team members named at the main lodge for men’s and women’s snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle as well as freeski halfpipe; and women’s freeski slopestyle
- 11 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Sunday, men’s freeski slopestyle finals followed by the naming of team members.
Mammoth’s website recommends watching the action from the sundeck at the main lodge, at the base of the pipe, or along the fence line in Main Park.
