This week marks 100 years since women won the right to vote and parliament finally opened its doors to female politicians.

Now the UK has more female MPs than ever before - with a third of the seats.

But when compared against the rest of the world Britain ranks just 37th.

The suffragettes breakthrough in 1918 led to the first female MP being elected - and the following year Nancy Astor took her seat in the Commons.

But while it was a victory for women, progress was still slow.

When Harriet Harman was elected in 1982 there were only 19 female MPs.

It was not until last year that a larger majority won their constituencies - with women taking 208 of the 650 seats.

Although there have been other successes for women with Margaret Thatcher becoming the longest serving Prime Minister in Britain - and Theresa May also heading up the government - these figures means Britain ranks just 37th in the list of countries with the highest number of female MPs.
