Faulty oven grounds Sydney-bound Qantas flight in New Zealand

A Qantas flight bound for Sydney from New Zealand has been forced to return to Auckland airport after smoke filled the cabin.

Flight QF144 was forced to turn around shortly after takeoff due to smoke from a faulty oven, a spokeswoman for Auckland Airport said.

Emergency carried out a full emergency response around 11.45am AEST.

"The aircraft landed safely and without incident. As is standard airport procedure, emergency vehicles escorted the aircraft to the terminal," a Qantas spokesman said.

Engineers inspected the aircraft and identified a fault with one of the ovens in the forward galley.

Passengers will be put on another flight to Sydney as soon as possible, the spokesman said.
