Luanda, ANGOLA, June 23 - The delegations attending the 20th extraordinary session of the Committee of Ministers of the Policy, Defense and security body of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have unanimously adopted 23 March as the region liberation day.,

Speaking to the press at the end of the works to discuss the main results achieved during the meeting, the minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuel Augusto, said that this is one of the most important outcomes for the region, especially for Angola, as this day also marks the Cuito Cuanavale Battle.

“It is a Great news for us and a great satisfaction, because the discussion for the setting a date to mark the liberation of the region has taken some years”, he added.

He said that along this period emerged some proposals from different countries of the region, but Angola has been discussing and stands up, always stressing the multidimensional character of Cuito Cuanavale Battle and its consequences, as it was the turning point of what happened in the Southern African, and afterwards on the continent.

According to Manuel Augusto, it is now expected that the Heads of State of the region ratify it at the Summit to be held in Namibia, next August.

He added that during the meeting, the participants have taken decisions concerning the situation of peace and security in the region, namely the situation in Lesotho, where Angola has deployed a military contingent in the ambit of efforts to stabilize that SADC member country.
