African Union wants creation of SADC parliament

Luanda, ANGOLA, June 25 - The African Union hopes that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) parliamentary forum will turn into a regional parliament for the development and well-being of people.,

This intention was expressed by the member of the African Parliament, Hélio de Jesus Pina Sanches, at the opening ceremony of the 43rd Plenary Assembly of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, chaired on Monday by the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço.

He considered the problem of the integration of the Pan-African Parliament as "a challenge for all States of the different economic regions of the continent".

"There cannot be a true economic integration, without the active participation of its populations, hence the primary role of the parliament," he said.

The chair of the Regional Group of SADC Women Parliamentarians, Mats'epi Molise-Ramakoae, hopes for greater emancipation of women and gender representation in the sovereign bodies of their respective countries.

She also expressed concern and requested measures to contain the number of cases of sexual abuse and early pregnancies, due to the negative implications for the development of the countries of the region.

He also called for free and fair elections in the countries in the region, highlighting those scheduled for this year in Zimbabwe and the DRC, as well as the increase in the number of women in the organs of sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, Boemo Segkoma, hopes that the forum agenda will contribute to real regional integration.

Fatuma Ibrahim Ali of the East African Legislative Assembly praised the Angolan leadership and its commitment to the constitution of the regional parliament.

He stated that Africa needs strong institutions to ensure the unity and prosperity of the continent, hoping that the forum will take care of essential elements for effective integration.

The speaker of the National Assembly of Mozambique, Verónica Nataniel Macano Dhlovo, hopes that an integrated and inclusive process of regional integration will take place in Angola's parliamentary forum.

In her message of thanks, she praised the conditions created for the success of the 43rd Plenary Assembly of the SADC Parliamentary Forum.
