Angolan president highlights SADC Troika work

Windhoek, ANGOLA, August 17 - Angolan Head of State João Lourenço Friday stressed the commitment of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Troika to the peace and security in the region. ,

 

This was during the opening session of the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community, taking place in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, between 17 and 18 August.

 

 President João Lourenço is expected to hand over the reins of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation of SADC to his counterpart of Zambia, Edgar Lungu.

 

In his speech, the President acknowledged the hard work of the Double Troika, comprising Angola, Zambia and Tanzania.

 

He also said that while at the helm of the Organ, in his one-year term, the body conducted  various actions to ensure the  stability, peace and security, mainly in Lesotho,  Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Madagascar.

 

As for Lesotho, the Angolan head of State said the body focused on the achievement of national inclusive dialogue between the government and all concerned parties.

 

In DRC, the statesman said the Organ closely monitored the dialogue aimed at effective elections in the country, on 23 December of this year.

 

João Lourenço welcomed the end of period for submission of candidatures for presidential elections in DRC.

 

According to him, this is another important step of the electoral process completed.

 

Whereas, the situation in Madagascar, he pointed out that the missions carried out by the former president of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano (mediator), led to negotiations between the three main political parties, which includes the appointment of a new prime minister and the formation of an inclusive government.

 

One of the first measures of these results was the announcement of elections for 7 November 2018 in Madagascar.

 

On the other hand, the statesman praised the recent general elections in Zimbabwe, despite the southern Africa’s country to have reported post-voter incidents that resulted in the loss of human lives.

 

The meeting of SADC leaders, going until Saturday, is analysing the political, economic and social issues of the body, founded on 17 August 1992 in Windhoek, Namibia.

 

SADC comprises Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Seychelles, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zambia.
