Namibia: SADC summit congratulates President João Lourenço

Windhoek, ANGOLA, August 18 - The Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on Saturday congratulated Angolan President João Lourenço on his victory in the last elections of 23 of August 2017.,

The congratulation is contained in the final communiqué at the meeting of leaders of that regional bloc held from 17 to 18 August in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, which was attended by the Angolan president.

The regional leaders also welcomed João Lourenço "for his excellent leadership during a year, in the handling of issues of Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation Body.

The Summit endorsed March 23 as the liberation day of the Southern Africa.

The date is dedicated to the Cuito Cuanavale battle, fought in the Angolan province of Cuando Cubango in 1988, between the Angolan Army, aided by Cuban forces, and the invading troops of the former apartheid regime in South Africa.

The 35-point communiqué on the implementation of projects that could leverage the social, economic and political progress of the member states in the future, also congratulates the Republic of Zimbabwe for holding elections.

With regard to the Zimbabwean elections, SADC leaders call on all parties in Zimbabwe to remain calm, while the judicial process on election results is handled in the appropriate courts.

They also urged the international community to lift the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and to support its economic and social development efforts.

As for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the meeting welcomed its President, Joseph Kabila, and his government for defending the local constitution.

it noted that the DRC government will continue to provide the funding to meet financial and logistical needs to allow for peaceful and credible elections.

The elections in neighboring DRC are set for next December.

The regional bloc groups SADC, Angola, South Africa, Comoros, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Seychelles, Malawi, eSwatini, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zambia.
